Impacts of changing bus fares
In July 2026, it was announced that free bus travel across the Territory would not continue past January of 2027, with a new system and associated fares yet to be announced.
As this change is implemented, we acknowledge that this may create additional barriers for community members in accessing mental health and/or alcohol and other drug supports. We encourage our members to consider the impacts that this may have on participants across the life span and how your organisation can help to bridge the gap.
For Seniors in our community, you might consider supporting them with an application for an NT Seniors Card or the NT Concession Scheme and NT Seniors Recognition Scheme.
The NT Seniors Card
For those aged 60 and over. Entitles card holders to free bus travel – its easy to fill in and does not require any ID.
NT Concession Scheme and NT Seniors Recognition Scheme
This is a $550 dollar credit card per annum and requires a bit more detail to apply.
To be eligible for the NT Senior Recognition Scheme you must be 65 years of age or older when you submit your application. If your membership is approved, your prepaid card will be issued within 20 working days via the nominated postal address.
If a reliable postal address cannot be provided, the prepaid card can be delivered to the nearest local Department shopfront for collection. The card must then be collected within 90 days.
