Two Day Cultural Competency Workshop
Registrations are now OPEN for the Darwin Cultural Competency Workshop, delivered by ARDS.
If you work with, provide services to, or engage with Yolŋu people and communities, this two-day workshop is an opportunity to build practical skills, deepen your understanding of Yolŋu culture and worldview, and strengthen the way you communicate and work across cultures.

About the workshop
This open workshop is available to organisations and individuals across the region, with places capped at just 18 participants to support an engaging and interactive learning environment.
The workshop is delivered by expert Yolŋu and Balanda cross-cultural facilitators and draws on ARDS' decades of experience working alongside Yolŋu communities in Northeast Arnhem Land.
Across the two days, participants will explore practical approaches to:
Understanding Yolŋu culture, worldview and ways of working
Building stronger cross-cultural relationships
Communicating across two worlds
Understanding Yolŋu language and communication
Working with Yolŋu approaches to decision-making and engagement
Reflecting on cross-cultural ethics and respectful practice
Using Plain English to make information clearer and more accessible
Before you arrive
Registration includes access to ARDS' acclaimed 10-module eLearn program, provided approximately two weeks before the workshop.
The self-paced eLearn introduces participants to key aspects of Yolŋu culture and worldview through insights from Yolŋu leaders, interactive activities and practical learning. Each module takes around 30 minutes, allowing you to build a strong foundation before joining us in person
We strongly recommend completing the eLearn before the workshop so you can arrive ready to participate, ask questions and get the most from the two days together.
The workshop includes ARDS' highly valued Plain English content, giving participants practical tools to make written and spoken information clearer, more accessible and more useful for the people they work with. ARDS describes Plain English as a crucial skill for effective cross-cultural communication.
$1,400 + GST per person for both days

ARDS' Cultural Competency Training is grounded in a Yolŋu-led approach and draws on more than 50 years of two-way engagement in Northeast Arnhem Land. The focus isn't simply on learning about Yolŋu culture—it's about developing practical skills that can help people and organisations work more respectfully and effectively across cultural contexts.
